What does becoming a business owner, a entrepreneur look like?

Wow! It’s been 4 years and I’m simply amazing that I am here, changing my future with this new endeavor -starting a blog. My name is Gina Davis of Custom Growth Group, and I’m in partnership with SendOutCards. If I can do this, you can change your future also.

Today I am excited to be releasing my very first blog, covering different aspects of me–the business, personal, and spiritual facets of me. How the decision to be a business owner and a entrepreneur changed my future and my life.

 How did it start?

It started a few years ago, while I was homeschooling my two boys, Austin and Ryan. Now young men. I have always consider them one of my great accomplishments. One day I began thinking about the future -my future. I realized I need to figure it out and ask myself,

“What will my future look like after they graduate?”

I knew I had to get back into the workforce, but what a severely ugly word–workforce. Just the thought of sitting in a 6×6 cubicle seemed more like prison or a punishment. Being part of a “workforce” was not something I looked forward to again. I had previously done the 9-5 thing and did not want that anymore. I deserved more.

Ever since being home with the kids, my time had been my own. We got up mid-morning, and our school day started after lunch. This is what worked for us. While this blog isn’t about me as an at-home Mom, that time period definitely shaped me and where I wanted to go from there.

My time had been my own. I made the decisions. You could even say I had two little employees. I really had been running a business for 8+ years, and I knew I wanted to find something where I continued being my own boss.

My mindset was changing, from going back-to-work to being a business-owner.

How was I to find what I would be passionate about?

At the time, I had no real business network and a limited social one. It was obvious that finding my new business wasn’t going to just happen. I decided to open myself to the world and to possibilities, and  that’s when SendOutCards walked into my life. Immediately I got it. This business really resonated with me.

I knew I had a lot catching up to do. Of course, this new venture of being a business owner and of building a business was exciting, yet it was different from anything I had done before. I had to learn and practice new skill sets, like networking, negotiation, public speaking, growing a business, and more. I had to learn to adapt previous skills sets. I began to sharpen skill sets such as my 20+ years in sales & marketing from he family business and leadership skills of leading a team of my homeschooled boys to leading a sales team. I would need a lot of patience and persistence to become successful business owner, but being in business for myself was quickly becoming a passion of mine.

Catching up wasn’t just limited to being a business owner or growing my business. It was a totally different world than when I had left the workplace. Social media had exploded, and it was a great big different world wide web out there. Now, just having email wasn’t enough. You had to somewhat proficient at Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and the more recent Pinterest, Google+.

Additionally, the way you access the world had completely changed. With addition of new smarter technology, the face of business is changing almost daily. You have to be plugged in to your “smart” devices–smartphones, tablets, small notebooks and their mobile apps. Technology makes a huge impact in business today.
