Lately, every time I’m on my Pinterest Account I am bothered. For awhile now, viewing my Pinterest account has made me feel dissatisfied with the large percentage of personal pins and boards on my account. Which has made me wonder, ‘Is it worth separating Pinterest personal and business accounts, pins & boards?’ How can I effectively and easily do this? Separating Pinterest personal and business accounts using Buffer is the answer.
I remember the first time I saw Pinterest. I wanted to run home, that moment (I was at a girls get-together) and sign up. At that time it was invitation only, so I breathlessly told the girl showing us this wonderfully yummy website, my email address so she could send me an invite. Of course I waited impatiently for that invite to arrive.
When I created my Pinterest account, it was before the advent of Business accounts. Therefore I just randomly mixed everything together my boards. Personal and business boards would be right next to each other. You might find my ‘Fashion: Oh, I Adore You’ board right next to ‘Pinterest for Business’ board.
During the next few years, I did learn more about how to look more professional from the many Pinterest experts out there, like
Anna C Bennett, White Gloves Social Media. Anna was one of the first people I pinned and ultimately followed that was specializing in Pinterest.
More recently I started following Jeff Sieh, Manly Pinterest Tips – a unique perspective for being a business on pinterest.
For awhile, I have been considering the advantages and disadvantages of separating pinterest personal and business accounts.
As of early December 2015, I have 143 boards and 416 followers. I am aware and not looking forward to the fact that separating them will mean, I lose a large percentage. The advantage to this is it will show me a truer picture of how many people are following my business.
Separating Pinterest personal and business accounts using Buffer:
After much waffling…yea I waffle, I made the decision to restart my personal page.
As I mentioned in the disadvantage column, it will require a bit of time investment to move the pins over. If this was a business account I was creating, inspecting the pins for value would be imperative. Has it garnered my account an abundance of shares? Is it popular? Yet this is a personal account, therefore what is of value? At this writing, the value I would be looking at is… do I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
Next, I would not want to move everything in one lump sum and well you can’t. That being said, pinning many at one time is not good Pinterest marketing technique. If you follow and read Pinterest Strategist, like Anna and Jeff, you know that the best strategy is to plan a strategy. Pin things at different times and above all else schedule, schedule, schedule.
That is a big order…but there is a solution, Buffer. Buffer is the social media scheduling platform I prefer over all the others.
From a free option to an option that takes care of corporate business, there is an account for everyone. Buffer let’s you attach your social media platforms. For solo-entrepreneurs and small business I highly recommend the Awesome plan, so that you can include 10 accounts across your social media platforms.
Here you can see, I have all my main platforms like Facebook, Google, Twitter and Linkedin for both business and personal accounts attached. Adding groups both in Facebook and Linkedin is an option. Note: At the time this was created I was testing out the Small Business plan, therefore you will see 12 accounts here.
Using this social media scheduling platform, Buffer to schedule pins to my new Pinterest account does all the work for me nicely.
Here is how to do that:
- Decide start a personal or business account
- Make the decision which account you will be starting over – Your personal account or your business account. I recommend starting your personal account. Keeping my existing account as for my business, means that I won’t have to start over completely gathering a business audience. Plus working on the new account will take time to move things, a personal account isn’t as critical that it will need to be done tomorrow. Also I’m not moving my existing business boards, which is another plus.
- Sign up for your new account
- Head over to Pinterest, make sure you log out. If you were logged into a business account, you should close down that window/tab of your browser and start a fresh window. Because the logged out page will be a business account page.
- Then click on this link, Pinterest and ‘sign up’ for your new personal account here. You will need a personal (not your business) email address.
- Decided to redo your business Pinterest? Then you should head over here to sign up for a new business account.
- Careful using social media platforms to register, because they might be tied to your existing Pinterest account already. Later you can set it up to log you in through a social media platform, if that is your preference.
- Confirm your email address
- You will have to confirm your address, so head over to your email to find it.
- Verify your email address. Now, your new personal Pinterest account is ready to go.
- Set up boards on your new Pinterest Accounts
- Sign up or login to Buffer
- Head over to the BufferApp website. *af Using this affiliate link supports this website.
- Connect your new Pinterest account in Buffer.
- You will need to be logged into your new Pinterest account.
- 1) click on Connect, bottom left; 2) click on Pinterest connect on the right.
- Add pins to your new boards.
- Schedule pins, add pins, move pins.
- Scheduling pins with Buffer.
- each plan has a limited number of shares per profile, so plan ahead.
Most likely you will have to add pins in stages and over a time period. I guesstimate it will take me a bit of time to clear the unwanted pins and boards out of my business account.
Next, my goal is to have several basic boards set up and populated with around 7 – 12 images before I start sharing my new Pinterest account. Why? too few pins and boards makes for a Pinner that looks inactive and people won’t be interested following you. Yet on the other hand, there is no way that I will be able enter everything at once and several reasons I would not want to:
- Using buffer let’s me spread the pins out – no mass overload for my audiences
- Using buffer to schedule pins over days and at different time periods – attract a more diverse audience
- Using buffer allows me to plan a strategy – concentrate on attracting a particular audience by pinning related pins
- Using buffer also let’s me know which of my pins garnered more interest and got clicks
Each Buffer plan has a certain number of shares per social media account. I recommend the Awesome plan, it’s a great starting point for shares. I’m currently testing out the small business plan on buffer. I want to see it in action. My results, that is another blog.
As I move forward, clearing up my business account pins & boards, I did a couple of things.
- I set up those boards I didn’t want in my business account as secret boards.
- I created a message image quote explaining what I was doing
- I will have added this blog also as an explanation.
This experience of separating Pinterest personal and business accounts has been interesting. And I’m only getting started.
